Building for the Future –
The Game Refuge Headquarters

To remain a “force for nature” and to keep up with the rapidly changing environment, a new center for Game Refuge management and education is essential. The last renovation of the headquarters was 24 years ago. A professional, effective, and efficient operations center will meet the needs of today and tomorrow, in design, scale, and function.

To achieve this next stage in preserving and advancing George McLean’s legacy, the campaign for the McLean Game Refuge was launched. Throughout the history of the Game Refuge, support from donors and volunteers has helped to further this powerful legacy. Their dedication, vision, and advocacy for the land and its wildlife have made a measurable, positive impact. Each of us can be a force for nature, as guardians and supporters of Senator McLean’s legacy. We need your help to fund the next phase of work to maintain this treasure.

Building on Legacy

Since 1982, our full-time professional director has managed the essential operations of the Game Refuge from the maintenance building on Barndoor Hills Road in Granby.

During that time:

  • we added nearly 1,000 acres of land
  • we expanded the trail system to include 27 miles of paths open to the public
  • we launched and completed numerous research initiatives
  • we created and protected critical wildlife habitats

To keep up with the ever-growing demands of the Game Refuge, staff support has increased to include summer and seasonal Forest Rangers. Despite ongoing efforts to adapt the current space to the changing needs of the staff and the community, it has become clear the maintenance building is no longer adequate. The space lacks the necessary functionality, resources, and storage for essential maintenance and safety equipment required to perform our work effectively.

The need to substantially enhance and expand the workspace is critical, and the time is now. After exploring many options and locations, we determined that the most efficient, affordable, and prudent plan is to renovate the existing maintenance building.

The renovation of the 3,368-square-foot facility will be funded by the philanthropic support of our community. The goal is to raise $850,000. Additionally, endowment and planned gifts can support trail maintenance and Forest Ranger programs.

The Impact

Community

Honoring Senator McLean’s vision of safeguarding the Game Refuge for people and nature, this project will strengthen connections within the community. The campaign will expand educational opportunities, enhance trail systems, and increase accessibility for those with limited mobility. With the support of neighbors and strategic partners, we will protect this space as a peaceful sanctuary for enjoying nature—preserved for generations to experience and cherish.

Conservation and Research

This larger and better-equipped space will enable us to attract and train an expanded workforce to protect wildlife and maintain diverse ecosystems. We will conduct research, store historical and archaeological artifacts, and expand conservation efforts while enhancing the stewardship of trails and infrastructure. These improvements will strengthen our ability to preserve the region’s natural and cultural resources for future generations.

Connection

The renovation will create a collaborative environment for organizations, research partners, educators, and scientists—including wildlife biologists, botanists, archaeologists, and forest experts from universities and conservation groups. This space will foster the sharing of knowledge and solutions to address climate change, habitat preservation, and environmental threats. We will have the resources to collect, maintain, and display history and artifacts, creating a vital hub for learning and discovery.

I Am a Force* for Nature

Our founder, Senator George P. McLean, established the McLean Game Refuge in 1932 as a wildlife sanctuary to preserve over 3,000 acres of meadows and forests he feared would be lost to development and resource exploitation. Today our wildlands have grown to over 4,400 acres, and we protect hundreds of animal species. We have a duty to carry out his legacy, we hope you will join us.

I Am a Force* for Nature

The McLean Refuge looks different in every season and feels like a new experience each year. It’s a part of what has kept me in Simsbury for over 50 years. When friends and family return to visit a trip to the Refuge is usually high on their list, and I am always honored to oblige.

I Am a Force* for Nature

My internships at the Game Refuge were critical career-building opportunities. I learned real-world environmental conservation skills and was mentored by talented professionals. This knowledge shapes how I view the world around me and makes me feel deeply at home within the forested Connecticut landscape. I am lucky to work with the Game Refuge in my role as CT DEEP’s Volunteer Water Monitoring Coordinator.

    CHLOE EDWARDS

I Am a Force* for Nature

The Game Refuge is a piece of heaven for me, so profoundly articulated in the will of Senator McLean:

I want the game refuge to be a place where some of the things God made may be seen by those who love them, as I loved them, and who may find in them the peace of mind and body that I have found.

The Refuge has enormous potential to become more accessible, to be safe and well maintained, to be a welcoming habitat for the diverse populations of plants and animals that inhabit its varied landscapes, and to be a place where research and collaborations both inspire others and lead to further progress. None of this, literally none of this, can be accomplished without a modern and well-equipped headquarters.

What I love about the McLean Game Refuge is that it is not one place, but many places rolledi nto one. I am a lifelong birder and I rejoice, wherever I go in the Refuge, that birdsong is my constant companion. I am moved by learning from McLean’s Director that forests are ever-changing. The Greek philosopher Heraclitus said that you cannot step into the same river twice. The same is true of forests — every time you visit the Refuge, you enter a new place.

I Am a Force* for Nature

…I go and lie down where the wood drake Rests in his beauty on the water and the great heron feeds. I come into the peace of wild things. Who do not tax their lives with forethought. Of grief. I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars. Waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

    – Excerpt from The Peace of Wild Things by Wendell Berry

I Am a Force* for Nature

I have many happy memories of hiking the trails of the Game Refuge with my late husband Bob. We always found something that caused us to pause and marvel — a blue mushroom, a tiny toad, a vista.

I’ll gladly do whatever I can to help sustain the future of a place that has been so special for us.

    DEB CAREY

I Am a Force* for Nature

Growing up in Granby, the McLean Game Refuge has always been my outdoor classroom. I was thrilled to begin working for the Refuge as a Forest Ranger and eventually complete my Master’s research here. Supporting this renovation will allow students like myself to have access to amenities such as a laboratory and library, which will greatly expand our research capabilities.
