The Community Café is a Memory Care initiative that gives caregivers and their loved ones with early-stage Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia a safe place to gather for social interaction, engagement and friendly support. It’s a free program that’s open to the community and meets the third Wednesday of every month from 2–3:30 PM at McLean. Registration is required. To learn more, please call 860-658-3941.

The McLean Meals on Wheels program makes an enormous difference in people’s lives. Through the dedicated service of community and McLean resident volunteers, it provides daily support to the health and well-being of the five-town area of East Granby, Avon, Canton, Granby and Simsbury.

Meals are prepared fresh each weekday morning in McLean’s Independent Living kitchen and consist of a complete hot meal, a cold meal, drinks and dessert items. This important program helps fight the threat of hunger and provides much-needed contact for homebound seniors who live alone in isolation. To learn more or to volunteer, please call

Driving a car is a vital part of American life and a privilege held dear by most adults, closely tied to their independence. The McLean Driver Assessment Program is designed to keep seniors safe on the road, not take them off of it.

In partnership with AAA and open to the community, this three-hour assessment consists of a one-on-one 90-minute clinical evaluation from a trained Occupational Therapist who assesses visual, cognitive, perceptual and physical abilities. It’s then followed by an on-the-road driving assessment with the Occupational Therapist and a AAA driving instructor in a specially adapted vehicle. McLean is the only senior living community in the state to offer this valuable program.

Since 1972, the McLean Auxiliary, a dedicated group of volunteers, has provided life enhancement support and wellness to McLean residents, families and team members.

From the beautiful gift shop to annual fundraisers to numerous activities with and for residents, it’s an integral part of the McLean family. Anyone can join the Auxiliary – current and former employees, residents, family members, friends and neighbors.

The McLean Auxiliary is financially supported by membership dues, fundraisers and the gift shop. The Auxiliary awards grants annually to support residents’ services and quality of life activities. Grants are given for residents’ special needs, such as haircuts, personal items and eyeglasses, life enrichment activities and entertainment programs, as well as equipment that enhances patient care. The Sorenson Media and Technology Center provides residents with a fun way to learn new technologies and stay connected with family and friends from all over the world.

From the use of Skype, Facetime and email to participating in research projects, such as genealogy software to trace their ancestry, the center offers access to a full range of technology to enhance seniors’ quality of life, including:

• The Pocket Talker amplifier for those who are hearing-impaired
• Large button devices including remotes and telephones
• Extensive music library of over 6,000 songs for individualized playlists
• Genealogy services
• The Great Courses System of Education
• Yale University online courses
• Foreign language instruction

McLean’s Smart House showcases new connected technologies that promote independence and reduce isolation for seniors who are living on their own. It also assists caregivers by providing increased security and convenience.

The Smart House is open to the community and is located in a cottage at The Village of McLean. Showcased products include Echo show and smart speaker, medication dispensers/reminders, guide lights and sensors, vision and hearing assistance, security alarms/wander guards, home assistance and adaptive devices and memory assistance.

Dedicated and highly trained in dementia care, these specialized volunteers know how to engage with someone with memory loss. Memory Care residents are matched with a compatible volunteer who offers companionship and shares in activities like reading, going for walks in our beautiful new courtyard, taking them to church and reengaging them in the things they like.

Developed through a partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association, McLean is the only community in the country to offer this highly recognized program.
