In Case of Emergency – Be Ready with a “Go Bag”

November 16, 2021

According to a CDC report, 20% of all hospital emergency room visits in the United States involves seniors 60 years and older.

Unfortunately, there may be a time when you or your loved one needs to leave home quickly. In the event of a sudden medical or weather-related emergency, having a “Go Bag” ready will help make an unexpected situation a little easier.

Here are some things you should include:

  • A personal profile that includes your full name, current medication, dietary restrictions and emergency contacts. Download your template here.
  • Prescription medication to last several days
  • An extra pair of glasses
  • Batteries for hearing aids
  • Copies of important documents such as home and medical insurance coverage, bank accounts, mortgages, living will and power of attorney information, as well as your social security card
  • A contact list of family and friends who will need to know where you are
  • A change or two of clothing
  • Toiletries
  • Comfort items such as a family photo or bible

Your “Go Bag” should always remain in the same location, and all caregivers should know where it is and what’s in it. It is also a good idea for caregivers to prepare a “Go Bag” so everyone is ready to leave at a moment’s notice.

Knowing that you or your loved one could encounter an emergency situation can be upsetting. However, simple things like packing a “Go Bag” can make an unexpected event less stressful for all involved.
